About Us
The nursery was established in May 1960 by Amelia Blackwell and before being
Little Tewkes was originally called “Amelia Blackwell”.
In May 2000 Deborah Battams took over the nursery from Amelia and has been the
proprietor ever since. Deborah prides herself on the fact that she has retained
all the original staff from when she started at the nursery in 1995; a static
work team provides a stable environment for your child.
Our purpose built building was opened on 20th November 2006. The nursery has
beautiful landscaped views; Hadleigh Castle can be seen from the nursery also. We
have a lockable pram port so you can leave your pram at the nursery knowing that
it will be safe, we also have full disabled access and a landscaped play area
for children to play outside.
The nursery caters for children aged 0-5 years and is one of the official
children’s centres for Canvey Island.
We are members of the National Day Nurseries Association, Pre-School Learning
Alliance and we are Ofsted registered.
There is ample free car parking to the front of the building; we would ask that
this facility is used only for the arrival and departure of children and with
the utmost care.
All our children are lovingly cared for by our fully qualified and experience
staff carefully chosen for their caring attitude, patience, understanding and
genuine love for children. All of our staff hold current first aid, food
hygiene, child protection and equal opportunity certificates together with their
nationally recognized child care qualification.
All members of staff are required to be registered with Ofsted and have police
and medical clearance to work with children. We ask that children address the
staff by their Christian names as we feel this establishes a more relaxed and
personal relationship.
